About Artwork

This is a recreation of a work of Lang Shining, an Italian painter to the Imperial Qing court in China. Born Giuseppe Castiglione, in Milan's San Marcellino district July 1688, he was a Jesuit missionary in China from 1715. Castiglione spent many years painting at the court of the Emperor Qianlong for which he is mainly remembered today. His style was a unique blend of European painting with Chinese subjects and themes. While in China, Castiglione took the name Lang Shining. In addition to his celebrated skill as a painter, he was also the architect who designed the Western-Style Palaces in the imperial gardens of the Old Summer Palace. This prominent artist, architect, and missionary died in Beijing in July 1776.
