Lang Shining Spring Product Details Chen Chaipin Embroidery Home
About Artwork This is a recreation of a work of Lang Shining, an Italian painter to the Imperial Qing court in China. Born Giuseppe Castiglione, in Milan's San Marcellino district July 1688, he was a Jesuit missionary in China from 1715. Castiglione spent many years painting at the court of the Emperor Qianlong for which he is mainly remembered today. His style was a unique blend of European painting with Chinese subjects and themes. While in China, Castiglione took the name Lang Shining. In addition to his celebrated skill as a painter, he was also the architect who designed the Western-Style Palaces in the imperial gardens of the Old Summer Palace. This prominent artist, architect, and missionary died in Beijing in July 1776.
One of our favorites, with the brilliant color of the pheasants offset by the relative sobriety of the background, this work presents the atmosphere of spring. This embroidery also demonstrates Chen Caiping’s mastery of color and composition to produce a masterpiece of traditional Chinese embroidery. As already noted, this work is again one which would make a treasured gift, decorate any space and also serve as a long term investment.
